Are you seeing poor conversion from visitors landing on out-of-stock product pages? This is a reminder that you cannot always control how people reach your site. Landing pages are great for campaigns you control, but what about things like social media? Suppose someone posts a direct link to one of your product pages on Twitter or Facebook. That can be great for sales, until you sell out.

We used segment-specific messaging to acknowledge that the popularity of the product meant it was not in stock. Then we offered a modest discount if the visitor found something else that they liked on this visit. Measured against a control group, this Monetate campaign produced:
- 471% lift in conversion rate
- 700% lift in new customer acquisition
- 256% lift in revenue
When you do it right, this type of targeted marketing can produce very impressive numbers. Of course, very few forms of marketing are guaranteed to work in all cases, so we advise testing of messaging and promotional campaigns using a control group or A/B tests. If the tests prove positive you can then drop the control group, go with the winning campaign, and maximize your lift. A strategy like the one described here can easily become a standard operating procedure for your online store, one that pleases your customers and your CFO.
