Data from 2004 must be irrelevant now. That is like ancient times in Internet Age.

Back then, companies were giving away shipping as a differentiator, but it was a business model which broke a lot of companies (pets.com for example.)

I appreciate the more recent data in the piece and agree that free shipping is a critical buying trigger. Amazon has an interesting twist in getting me to pay for free shipping!

  Even today, the data from the companies we work with still indicates that cart abandonment rates can significantly be impacted by testing free shipping.

The “buys 30% more per order” is not true for our site (we have a large nonfood walmartish assortment). The revenue per order goes down and the percentages of orders under 15$ rises a lot when we introduce free shipping.
